Don't judge me. I think Jason did this for the first time, and once we saw Brock's reaction, I couldn't stop.

Enter Sandman
We played in the sand for the first time on Friday. Another "first" on the baby calendar. As a result, he got pretty dirty for the first time, too. I had to work to get the dirt out from under his fingernails at bath time. Get used to it, Babe. This is what being a little boy is all about :)

I Like to Eat Peaches and Ba-nay-nays
Barney the purple dinosaur was way after my time, but for some reason I know one of his songs "I Like to Eat Apples and Bananas" . Be careful, it will get stuck in your head if you listen to it. Well, Brock has never had an apple, but he did put some peaches and bananas in his mouth this week. His first taste of real food!

The Gourd That Keeps on Giving
We got up the morning after Halloween and went for a walk in the brisk autumn sunshine. Brock wore his "Mommy's Little Pumpkin" outfit one last time, sported an orange bib, and kept cozy with his hat and mittens. Next on the agenda? What better to do on the day after Halloween than play with our pumpkin? My pre-school teacher mother reminded me the other day, "It's all about tactile learning at this age, you know. They want to touch and feel everything." So this activity is for you, Mom. Brock had fun learning all about pumpkins, from their smooth orange outsides to their slimy gooey insides. It was only slightly messy. Totally worth it!

Sweet Genius
Do you like Red Velvet Cake? If you don't live in the South, maybe I should first ask if you have ever had it. I was introduced to Red Velvet Cake when I moved to Atlanta. It is one of my husband's favorites. Red cake with a subtle flavor that's hard to put your finger on...maybe mildly chocolate...layered with cream cheese icing. Interesting and a little confusing. Why is it red? What do you put in something to make it only kind of taste like chocolate? I now have the answers to my questions. Copious amounts of food coloring and a hint of cocoa with buttermilk and vinegar. I finally uncovered these mysteries when I recently made my husband a Red Velvet Oreo Cheesecake to celebrate his new job. He found the recipe online a few days ago and said, "Mmmmmm...doesn't this sound goooooood?" That was my cue. It was fun to make and turned out pretty well if I do say so myself. Must have been my cute little sous chef :)
I'll scrape the sides of the bowl, Mom. |
